Calcified Fetus
This is a lithopedion, also known as a calcified fetus, or a "stone baby". I know it looks like a mummified Thanksgiving turkey, but it is actually a human fetus, which died during pregnancy, is too big to be absorbed by the body, and calcifies, or turns into bone, thus protecting the mother from the problems associated with having a dead baby rotting inside her. These can go undetected for many years, only to be found by X-ray during an examination for other problems, and additional pregnancies resulting in a live infant are possible for a woman carrying a lithopedion. According to Wikipedia, a calcified fetus dating to 1100 B.C. was found during an archaeological dig in an undisclosed location, and is the earliest existing example. I'm sure that the Mutter Museum (home of many medical abnormalities, most of which would be enjoyed by DR members) has at least one of these, and this one may have come from there.  · |

babies are so cute that they turn into stone to be nice for their mother. teens are not so nice, and will often shout and cause the mothers many headaches |
