Re: Burns So Severe They Need Escharatomy
Very common for extensive full thickness burns. Classically, compartment syndrome. This is done to prevent further tissue damage from ischemia, and because swelling tends to be so bad it compresses internal organs as well, leading to decrease lung capacity. Pt. Should be incubated, maintenance fluids, med induced coma and transferred to a burn unit. High risk for pseudomonas infection. Very commonly seen in trauma centers. Hope all went well for him.
