In Costa Rica they paint these giant yellow hearts whenever someone gets killed on the road. They're all over the highways there.

In Florida, they are round and I believe have the person's name and DOD on it. I have to drive over near Bradenton/Tampa tomorrow and (unfortunately) there are a bunch on the back roads I take. I'll stop and look at one and verify. If it is a relative's marker, we can post a pic of it, right?!?! I think there's one up where my cousin was killed by a drunk driver...... again, I'll check. Morbid curiosity now.

In NH too, family will sometimes put up a white cross, and often other personal items. I recently saw a particularly distracting display with a bunch of flags. Technically they’re supposed to be taken down after 30 days, I believe. |

I lived there while taking care of my dying father who, by his own admission, foolishly retired there. This is everyday CR. Not only do you see this regularly but everyone knows someone missing something due to road accidents esp on motos and bicycles. That is, if they're lucky enough to survive. The worst part for the rest of us is how they do not have Coroners. Only a Judge can declare a person dead at the scene. I lived 2 hours away from San Jose, the capital where our Judges lived in big houses in gated communities... in San Jose. You will on average wait 3-6 hours in parking lot traffic to get past a fatality. Then everyone gets to see all the gory details as you pass which for us here might be okay but sometimes a lot more is happening that just some gore. One of the worst I ever sat through was a tourist with his 12 and 14 daughters in the car. A semi tried to pass and didn't see them or more honestly, didn't look enough hard. He hit them right in that front corner where the driver sits. Dad was instantly killed and very obviously dead. These two little girls are completely alone. Mom is in the US and she came by the next morning. They sat there for hour after hour with their Dad's corpse hanging half out of the car, waiting for some f'ing judge with his huge ego in his huge Mercedes to show up and say, "Si, el muerte, esta mi firma y adios." Isn't he important! He's the BMOC of this 3rd world "place." Those girls and their dad's 8 hour old corpse were still there when we finally got past it. The both of them just sat on the hillside behind the car, dazed and crying ALONE. It's a heartless place. Life is cheap there. I was happy to leave when I did. I do not recommend it to anyone ever. It's like Jamaica. Tourists should stay where they belong. I'm not lying when I say twice, I pulled over and got a cheap casita vs sit for 6 hours. You only sit through that a few times before you just can't. I'm also not lying when I say before you do drive farther than 25km, you check CR FB boards for notification of accidents as well as google maps GPS. You will change your plans due to it. F that place. |

In phoenix az it used to be pictures and candles. Last year i was droving to my parents at night and saw a full fucking scarecrow of a thing with the kids graduation gound propped up, it almost ran me off the road because of the distraction. There is one not too far away where people kept putting up more and more junk, now there is literally chairs and shit so the family can sit there and chill while they are mourning. People are getting so self centered. The entire public does not have to know about your healing process. Its a hazard.
