That's pretty much what happened to me, although the bones were sticking out on the other side in my case. Basically, my foot was twisted off and left hanging by just skin. They had to break it an re set it a couple of times as it was healing to get it right but it's pretty much normal now, 17 years on.
I just regret not being able to get hold of the photos they took at the time
