Brazil - a Photographic Journey of a Man's Battle with Cancer of the Tongue

I came across this on FB. Yesterday, a woman had posted many photos + videos of her brother's suffering with cancer of the tongue, which he lost his life to a year ago.

I will just leave the translation of it here, instead of doing my own write-up.

Please be warned that it is an upsetting set of imagery.

Today 05/09 is 1 year since my brother left me, and I'm going here not to expose his image, but at least try to make people understand what cigarette addiction does.

Like me work in the field of dentistry, in August 2018 my brother came to me with a minor injury to the tongue that did not heal. We immediately ordered a biopsy of the site, through friends and very quickly we got the result, CARCINOMA EPIDERMOIDE OF LANGUAGE then it all began..

Consultations, exams, and the outcome that would have to operate. The days went by and the injury increasingly opening up, the pains increasing, seeing him almost scream when drinking water left me on the ground, I started a campaign via whatsapp to get a bed on Ophire Loyola, and a caring soul helped us, he then had surgery on the 17/12/2018th, started at 7:30 pm and ended at 17 pm, it was a day of distress, in principle it was said that he could lose his tongue, but he said it didn't matter, that he I just wanted to live, but it was removed only part of it, they emptied the neck glands where they put 2 drains, but it wasn't necessary at the moment to trach and not go to ICU. He was radiant with happiness, and very optimistic for healing, used nose probe to feed.

The material removed at the time of surgery was sent for analysis, and then the sad news came to us that the disease had already reached 2 lymph nodes, and had already metastasized.
the cells increased and then the bleeding began, they were terrible frames and very distressed.
So the radiotherapies and chemo began... another suffering, many pains, many trips to emergency.

One day the doctor said that he would have to have surgery to placement a GTT probe, straight to the stomach, because he was no longer able to stay in the nose, passing through the throat, he cried a lot, because he wanted to put food back in the mouth and knew this was getting more distant.

Things started to get worse, the shortness of breath and demential paintings began because of the amount of morphine he used to reduce the pains that was bigger every day.

In this time of treatment, neck surgery and the site he used drain was completely open, a horrible wound that many couldn't stand to see.

On the 19/07/2019th he admitted to the emergency, there he spent 7 days and the doctor advised us that he was going to the palliative sector, that is, death row and there was the last days of his life.

In this period in the palliative sector, he suffered a lot. He went through an emergency tracheostomy to breathe. Then we didn't hear his voice anymore. He stayed only one night and one day in the ICU, he was a brave warrior, but the doctor said that at the moment From the tracheostomy, they had to drill the tumor that was already in the neck and that it would cause some problems, the day after leaving ICU he was very happy, it looked like nothing happened, but the next day it was just getting worse, the disease was Quick in the consequences, the face swelled up a lot, the remedies didn't work anymore, the morphine shots were too high, to the point of putting a person induced coma, but he didn't even sleep

We already asked God to end it, we couldn't stand to see him suffer, I asked him to take it in a serene moment, but it wasn't like that, the moment of his death was horrible, the tumor burst and he was gone in a puddle of blood

As I said at the beginning, I'm not here to expose my brother's image, but to show what cigarette can cause, especially to some people in my family who look like they didn't learn.

Re: Brazil - a Photographic Journey of a Man's Battle with Cancer of the Tongue

fucking horrible disease. wish there was a cure to cure all cancers

Squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue, also known as oral tongue cancer, is an aggressive form of cancer that generally affects older people. Patients with the disease often find it difficult to eat, swallow food, or speak. Reasons for its generally poor prognosis include late detection, before pain usually starts and only when physical symptoms such as lesions are present, and a propensity for spreading to other sites in the body.

But in a potential harbinger of hope for arriving at an earlier diagnosis and treatment, in a new study published in Oncotarget, a team of researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center has found that bacterial diversity and richness, and fungal richness, are significantly reduced in tumor tissue compared to their matched non-tumor tissues. This raises the prospect that certain bacteria and fungi, in sufficient amounts and in possibly interactive ways, may play a part in the development of oral tongue cancer. (Previous research has shown that bacteria can spur gastric and colorectal cancer and that bacterial/fungal interplay can contribute to or exacerbate Crohn's disease.)

"Our findings mean that it may be possible to perform precautionary testing in patients at high-risk for oral tongue cancer," said the study's co-senior author Mahmoud A. Ghannoum, PhD, professor in the Department of Dermatology at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. "If the patterns that we found are present in people who are not yet showing signs of lesions, we could begin treatment early, offering the possibility of better patient outcomes."

Oral tongue cancer, which arises in the anterior two-thirds [front] of the tongue, has been rapidly increasing and is now the second most common malignancy in the oral cavity. While human papillomavirus causes nearly ninety percent of base-of-tongue tumors [back], HPV is rarely found (only 2.3 percent) in oral tongue cancer. The causes of oral tongue cancer are unclear, but genetic mutations probably play a role, while smoking and chewing of tobacco, alcohol use, and poor dental hygiene are correlated with the development of this type of cancer.

"Poor oral hygiene has long been associated with oral cancers, suggesting that oral bacteriome (bacterial community) and mycobiome (fungal community) could play a role," said co-senior author Charis Eng, MD, PhD, professor and vice chairman of the Department of Genetics and Genome Sciences at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine and Hardis Chair of the Genomic Medicine Institute at the Cleveland Clinic.

While the bacteriome is increasingly recognized as playing an active role in health, the role of the mycobiome has been much less studied, and never before in the case of oral tongue cancer. In the new study, the researchers extracted tissue DNA from 39 paired tumor and adjacent normal tissues from patients with the cancer. Analyses showed that Firmicutes was the most abundant bacterial phylum, and was significantly increased in tumor compared to non-tumor tissue, 48 percent vs. 40 percent, respectively. In total, the abundance of 22 bacterial and seven fungal genera [types] was significantly different between the tumor and adjacent normal tissue, including Streptococcus, which was significantly increased in the tumor group (34 percent vs. 22 percent in normal tissue.)

"Studies are starting to emerge demonstrating interactions between bacteria and fungi in the formation of disease," said Ghannoum. "Thus, additional research is needed aimed at understanding how these two communities influence or are influenced in disease settings such as oral tongue cancer."

Re: Brazil - a Photographic Journey of a Man's Battle with Cancer of the Tongue

I had a distant relative with similar cancer on similar location (it was on his lower right cheeck, close to his neck)

we visit him long ago and it looks very agonizing

He's wide awake but can't speak at all, so he write things down. He said he have the worst headache everyday and the painkiller simply don't help at all
