That's scary. When I was 12,I was diagnosed with Arnold Chiari malformation. But a few surgeries, I turned out fine. I had a build of spinal fluid in my head. Then headaches were insane.

The headaches of Hydrocephalus are severe!! It 'appears' that this woman is in a vegetative state. For the last one hundred years the medical community has led us to believe that people in vegetative states do not feel pain and any reflexive movement during painful procedures were just that, a reflex, nothing more.

The difference in the physical environment should, therefore, also be considered when discussing neuroimaging studies on human pain perception."

If the noise of the MRI provided enough distraction for those patients in vegetative states, it would certainly affect the final study outcome. Science must then ask the question, "How many of those patients tested might have responded differently if they had been tested in silence; might their brains have produced the markers science knows to show pain"?

There are places in this world where it is perfectly acceptable, yes, even LEGAL, to perform surgery on someone in a vegetative state, WITHOUT ANESTHESIA, simply because it has not been DEFINITIVELY DECLARED BY SCIENCE with any 100% certainty that these patients definitely, beyond all doubt, feel pain. My thought is, "would you not err on the side of caution"?! Apparently not. What do we need? More research. Why is that not happening? Ethics. They used a moderately painful electric shock in Europe. "Can we perform painful experiments on your family member who is vegetative and may or may not feel this pain"? I'm sure you can now appreciate the controversy involved.

Families with loved ones in vegetative states will still want answers, we all will, I DO! Our bodies are not indestructive, in some way they can be quite fragile, and our brains, delicate in structure.

I have a final directive to fill out and turn in. I am going to make sure that if I am brain dead, or a vegetative state, everything will be shut down so that I am let go.

Good god, that’s horrific. Surgery without anesthesia??

Years ago I had a buildup of CFS in my skull. The headaches I had were indescribable. And it was nothing like this. I still remember how incredible I felt post spinal tap.

I am horrified this person has to “live” this way.

Is this directive something one can print out online? I’ll do some research. Not only for myself, but for the sake of my loved ones I’d like it to very clear what my wishes are.
