Question regarding boxing: In Rocky there's a scene in the big fight where Rocky tells his corner helper to "Cut him". What does that mean, and what are they "cutting"? I saw this post and it brought that question to mind.

They were talking about cutting a swelling around Rocky's eye so it wouldn't swell shut.

They might have done that in the old days, but it wouldn't get to that point now without the Ref or Doctor stopping it........ The old days were 100x more brutal than anything that happens now, death was a regular thing.
