Birth Defects in Vietnam Attributed to Agent Orange
Birth defects in Vietnam have been attributed by the Vietnamese government to Agent Orange, a herbicide used during the Vietnam War. Agent Orange contained the manufacturing contaminant TCDD, a form of dioxin identified as a developmental toxicant. From 1961 to 1971, Operation Ranch Hand sprayed an estimated 18 to 20 million gallons of herbicides over southern Vietnam, including about 11 to 12 million gallons of Agent Orange. Vietnam's government estimates that 3 to 4 million people have conditions or disabilities attributable to Agent Orange or dioxin. The United States has disputed that causation was established. Separately, the Department of Veterans Affairs presumes that spina bifida, excluding spina bifida occulta, in qualifying veterans' biological children is linked to their service. That benefits presumption remains despite a change in the scientific assessment: National Academies reviews in 2014 and 2018 classified the evidence for an association with spina bifida as inadequate or insufficient, replacing an earlier finding of limited or suggestive evidence. |

Re: Birth Defects in Vietnam Attributed to Agent Orange
The kids with the bulging eyes have some form of craniosynostosis, which means that some of the soft spots in their skull that should allow the brain to grow have fused before they should. I can't say for sure that Agent Orange has nothing to do with it, but I'm pretty sure. Part of the problem is that I've seen those pictures before on other sites... exposure to dangerous chemicals doesn't usually do weird things like this to babies. Unfortunately, it usually just causes them to be brain-damaged or dead. |
