Ectopia cordis is a birth defect in which the heart is abnormally located. In the most common form, the heart protrudes outside the chest through a split sternum. Less often the heart may be situated in the abdominal cavity or neck.

I knew a guy that was born like this, with his heart outside of his body. He had several various surgeries after the initial one to place the heart inside as a newborn. He lived into his 20's but died of heart-related issues. R.I.P. - T.B.
