Re: Baby Born with Heart Beating Outside of Chest
Sounds right. I remember seeing this on Guiness World Records on TV long ago and also on Medical Incredible on Discovery Health. The person in this case grew up normal but needed to wear a type of chest-vest protector. They show him playing basket ball and such. It's been a while since I've seen this so I don't his current condition. Thought I'd share...

Re: Baby Born with Heart Beating Outside of Chest
My dad has actually seen this before...he's a retired cardiac specialist. He said what they had to do was build a 'shield' around the baby's heart, made of skin and muscle, so that it wasn't exposed anymore. The baby only lived for about two years, though. |

Re: Baby Born with Heart Beating Outside of Chest
The name for this condition is a bifid sternum or a cleft sternum. The survival rate is quite good this day and age. I was born like that in 1974 with heart and lungs on the outside, operated on a day after birth. Survival rate then was very poor. I'm still here. What it is, is that the chest doesn't join during devalopment. It's easily corrected now.
