This is a cool post but the information in the article is a little out-dated. The cause is now known: it's a recessive genetic condition with a wide range of expression (meaning it can be very severe or very mild). Prenatal diagnosis is also possible now, because ultrasound technology has improved and the classic features can be recognized. People with this syndrome can and do live to adulthood, if it is not severe.
