How did a BB gun manage to do this? I've been shot by BB guns many times and they've left nothing but a faint red mark, even at point blank range.

That injury looks like it was caused by a weak Air rifle.

This is definitely a BB gun. You can see the BB in his hand.

I watched as a kid shot another in the chest with a bb gun. left a perfect little hole. Never got it out.

What! Should have bought him some Vagisil and shoved "Older brother" into the basement for a "Clean-up" that included a toothbrush scrubbing of the walls.....what is wrong with this generation?
