Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

I can offer some insight. I have bipolar disorder and I spend a lot of time in psych hospitals. I'm in one now, actually.

Art by the mentally ill folk who I've been hospitalised with is usually much more boring than these examples ... landscapes, portraits, colouring for adults. And the subject nature is usually boring too.

My theory is that those who *do* create the disturbing stuff keep it to themselves, maybe even destroy it. Out of shame.

Personally, my work is also pretty boring lol

Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

Does anyone remember the schizophrenic who posted the video of what he goes through on a daily basis? Alot of these have the same sort of structure to their imagery as his video did.

Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

Great Thread!

So awesome to see, powerful images and talent from people, their mental heath perhaps a lucid bend in the lens, but really a non issue. Its human stuff, and its real.

A nice change from the "My Art" crap from minions of green haired vintage dressed hipster pussies we see all over.

Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

lol, so tell me this since you seem to be an expert on this topic, whats the difference between being depressed and having depression apart from being diagnosed with it? how do you qualify or jump a grade from depressed to having "depression"? some people are sad, some more than others, some less than others, some are a little sad during certain periods, some are sad for a bunch of periods...point is who's to say this scale of depression (a spectrum of depression from small scale to large scale) is measurable to where you are officially diagnosed with it. tons of people have been over-diagnosed, especially here in the U.S. so they can get juiced up, so they can fit in a neat category, and so that the docs, pharma companies can get paid handsomely.
I just seen this. I'm just gonna assume someone tried to say you have or diagnose you with depression and you're pissed off about it?
After one unfortunately suffers from MDD (major depressive disorder) most of their life (yes, me) you DO tend to become educated about the disease. ANYBODY who understands it (doctors, nurses, patients, etc) will tell you any mental illness is very complex. I am not a doctor so I may not be able to fully explain it to someone who is ignorant on the topic. But I do understand a lot more about it than the average person.
As for just wanting to get "juiced up"..WHAT? I take 2 different antidepressants and no they don't make you high or drunk..or whatever you're trying to say. I'll also assume you know nothing about medicine?

Next time, comment on something you actually know about

Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

Been diagnosed with depression. Ever since I started taking medication my inspiration and motivation for drawing has increased so much. SSRI's had the worst effects for me because I literally felt the artificial serotonin in my brain, but I didn't feel better in general. The art blockade got better when I started SNRI's but it's never been the same since. I have quite a lot of drawings like this from the time before my depression was diagnosed.

Re: Art by Mentally Ill People

Some people whine in pious "educating tones" but just love to identify themselves as a pathology.

My beef is having to pay their way with my tax $ when they "cant work".

I like them. That first one kind of looks like it was inspired by Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.
That's what I thought too!
