Many of us do use earplugs and/or noise dampening/cancelling headphones during times when we know there will be fireworks/etc. But he was out and about - he needed to be situationally aware of his surroundings (this is another part of PTSD in many veterans as not knowing what's going on can be triggering as well). It's easier when you're at home or in another 'safe' environment. My neighbors set off so many fireworks close to my home that even with headphones blaring metal music, I heard them. It was awful but I respect their right to celebrate. Next year I'll have a sign. The Vietnam vet that lives near me (next door but across a huge goddamned yard) was in absolute hell and had to be sedated. He has problems with things being around his head and headphones and the like wouldn't have helped him. So what I'm saying is that while using earplugs or headphones is a possible solution, for many of us it's not actually viable. It all depends on the action we saw and what we have to live with after. And to the person asking why he was allowed near a firearm: he was safer with that gun than most people that are allowed to have them. He at least KNEW what it was like to use one on another person, knew and understood the damage to both parties. Most people with guns don't - and that's goddamned scary. No, him being armed wasn't the problem. The way this country tries to ignore it's Vets is. Maybe if we treated our goddamned veterans better, this shit wouldn't keep happening. But feel free to tell me I'm the one with the wrong ideas here. I've shouldered heavier burdens than your ignorance before and I'll do it again if I must. |

Thanks for the reply. I missed the part where he was out in public; thought he was having something at home where the plugs might have helped. Not trying to belittle PTSD at all, but it's got to be damn hard to get an entire local neighborhood to shut down celebrations.  |

I have a cousin and two buddies who were all in the army in Afghanistan and all 3 are on some type of disability now due to P.T.S.D. If the army wants to take a person break them down and rebuild them for the army they need to rebuild them for civilian life when there done serving. |

Can someone with a traumatically busted brain, be "rebuilt"? You never go back to "normal", it seems. I've never heard of someone saying "I used to have P.T.S.D." I think you always have it, after you acquire it. |

I have PTSD as well, and they bother me... BUT c'mon. It isn't WW2 ffs. I seen some bad shit and was hit 2 times. I guess a mental breakdown is a mental breakdown. This shit is sad to see happening to people. Not knowing what you are getting into b4 you join the Military is the worst thing you can do to yourself in this life.
