Arm Replant

A 32-year-old right-hand-dominant man presented with a traumatic guillotine-type amputation of the left forearm at the junction of the musculotendinous transition. The amputated part was well preserved, with a minimal zone of injury.

The patient sustained no other injuries and he was cleared for surgery by the trauma service. He was taken to the operating room for replantation of the amputated part.

Unbelievably, they do.....if they can reattach all of the tendons through the carpal tunnel (which actually looks like little "tunnels"). I have seen a few cases (very few) in my medical classes where docs have transplanted limbs from "fresh" cadavers onto living patients. Freaky shit! I will stick to my trauma/emergency medicine, thank you. I just want to get them while they are still hamburger and pass them on to the specialists......
