Ankyloglossia, commonly known as tongue tie, is a congenital oral anomaly which may decrease mobility of the tongue tip and is caused by an unusually short, thick lingual frenulum, a membrane connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. Ankyloglossia varies in degree of severity from mild cases characterized by mucous membrane bands to complete ankyloglossia whereby the tongue is tethered to the floor of the mouth.

My sister was born tongue-tied and the doctor cut it when she was a few months old. My nephew is tongue-tied and does suffer from some speech issues.

I had to have that one and the one that is between your top front teeth. If you rub your tongue on the inside of your upper lip you'll feel one. Mine went all the way down past my teeth, making it look like a uvula at the front of my mouth.

I never realized it was a real medical issue.

I thought we all got tongue tied once in awhile.
