Anastasia and Tatiana Dogaru: Head-Conjoined Near Rome, Italy, 2004
Anastasia and Tatiana Dogaru were born conjoined at the head near Rome, Italy, in January 2004, to Romanian parents. The top of Tatiana's head was joined to the back of Anastasia's. They shared blood vessels, and Anastasia, who had no kidney function, relied on Tatiana's kidneys. Surgeon Kenneth Salyer brought the twins to Dallas in October 2004. A first staged separation operation at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital in Cleveland was halted in June 2007. Separation was called off in August 2007 because the risks were too high. In November 2008, Salyer said separation had become too dangerous; other medical centers had also declined to undertake it. |
