Amastia Medical Term: Definition and Comparison With Amazia
Congenital amastia is the absence of breast tissue, the nipple and the areola on one or both sides. It differs from amazia, in which breast glandular tissue is absent but the nipple and areola are present. Athelia means the nipple and areola are absent. Poland syndrome is the most typical cause of one-sided amastia. It can involve absent chest muscles, rib abnormalities and short or fused fingers, and occurs in about 1 in 20,000 to 30,000 births. Bilateral amastia often occurs with abnormalities of the skin, teeth or nails and affects males and females equally. It can also occur alone or with palate or upper-limb abnormalities. Reconstruction can involve tissue expanders followed by implants, tissue flaps, or a combination of these techniques. |
