Acid attacks happen regularly in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Cambodia (amongst other places) However Pakistan is one of the worst. Acid is freely available to purchase and cheap. Women and young girls are burned for many reasons.
Rejection of marriage, feuds with another family, internal family 'disputes', after rape, rejection of sexual advances, seeking a divorce, refusal to 'obey' or please husband, husband wants divorce but doesn't want wife to ever re-marry. The list goes on. In Afghanistan girls are routinely burned with acid for going to school.

Due to the incredibly high rate of corruption, if the man has enough money he can just pay police and get out of jail, even if tried and sentenced. Often they will pay the police to stop the arrest.

The pain of the melting face aside, many of these women are blinded and disabled by these attacks, leaving them without means of supporting themselves, the stigma of the horrible scars.

There are 7,000 verified acid attacks in Pakistan in just two cities alone, Lahore being one, the other city name was not listed. Children are often burned as when the acid is thrown, the men do not care if they are holding a child. Also young girls 10-11 get burned for various reasons, recently 3 sisters were burned for walking without a male relative, and 2 sisters were burned (reason not listed).
Men are also burned with acid, although rarely compared to women, the reasons are usually property disputes or jealousy.
