I have worked in nursing for over 12 yrs and that is not the only way to get it. It can be caught by something as simple as touching skin, and shows up in children as young as 1. There are 2 types of HSV, this type is called labialis, it occurs mostly above the waist. I don't know if or what med school your friend went to, but they should get their money back.
