Zacarias Moussaoui Trial Exhibits (2006): 9/11 Ground Zero, Pentagon Photos
United States v. Zacarias Moussaoui was the only September 11-related prosecution to reach trial in a US court. Moussaoui, a French citizen, admitted six conspiracy charges in April 2005. The 2006 Alexandria, Virginia proceeding therefore concerned sentencing, and prosecutors submitted the exhibits to demonstrate the victims' suffering. On May 3, 2006, the jury rejected a death sentence. Judge Leonie Brinkema then imposed six life sentences without possibility of release the following day. In July 2006, the court put all 1,202 admitted exhibits online, making it the first US criminal case to do so. Seven numbered exhibits from that collection consist of three depicting human remains on West and Albany Streets in Lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001, and four showing remains within the Pentagon after American Airlines Flight 77 hit the building. Although Moussaoui is frequently described as the twentieth hijacker, no court reached that conclusion. The 9/11 Commission instead identified Mohamed al-Qahtani, who was denied entry at Orlando a month before the attacks, while Moussaoui testified that his training was for a separate operation planned for later.
