Young Woman Killed by Her New Boyfriend
In Siem Reap at 6am yesterday (14th May 2018), a woman was found murdered. 26 year old Sun Kunsrey, was a 'professional karaoke entertainer' (I've been told that this means prostitute). The suspect, is her boyfriend of 2 months, truck driver, Mao Soksu, who's around 30 years old. He is on the run.           |

Yes, I'm the one who posted that thread! I find it strange that 'karaoke entertainer' refers to a prostitute, if everyone knows that then why don't news articles just say so?! |

Maybe for the same reason we say waste management worker instead of garbage man? At any rate, I doubt she deserved to be killed.  |

Same reason that we here in the states refer to professional strippers as 'exotic dancers.' It's a cultural euphemism that ever-so-slightly de-stigmatizes work that really has no business being stigmatized in the first place (assuming it is consensual work).

Around here in the Philippine Islands, karaoke entertainer is a man/woman who sings along with a videoke machine in front of a group of people inside a videoke room. They sing whatever songs the customers play. Not necessarily prostitition but many frosties find this a good way to hunt clients. I knew some students who does this for income. Just singing.

There is this tv show with Americans who marry people from other countries and there is this couple, a fat american ''saving'' a girl from a karaoke bar but she was in fact a prostitute. She's a 24 yo Thai woman, he's 49.
