This is true. It's down to a combination of being able to smell the biochemical changes in a dying or dead person, as well as picking up subtle physical and body language cues the humans don't really notice. I had an 86 year old neighbor who dropped dead one day on his driveway while taking his golden retriever for a walk. The dog was usually a barely manageable ball of energy and excitement when they got outside, jumping around and running in circles, and if it could ever give the old man the slip, it took my neighbor half a day to catch him. His granddaughter showed me the footage from the security camera of his demise. The dog was jumping around like usual, but then it abruptly stopped, turned to my neighbor, and sat down. The old man fell over about 5 seconds later, and even though he had dropped the dog's leash, it lay down beside him and stayed there for 45 minutes until the mailman discovered the body. |
