Young Indian Couple Double Suicide
I see about two or three of these a week from India and its nearby regions. Very common for couples to commit suicide together over there, often because their families disallow their marriage or because they are married and in debt. This is a case of the former, with a 22yo man and his 20yo girlfriend. They both fled their hometown in order to 'elope' since their marriage was forbidden by their families, but apparently discovered that they could not make it on their own.  They rode his motorcycle to a clearing in the woods, drank poison together, and croaked. Based on the coroner's proposed time of death, they had been dead about 6-8 hours when these photos were taken. Poison is such an ugly, unpleasant way to go...can't imagine why they'd choose it over hanging, which is at least a bit quicker.  ·  ·  ·  ·  ·  · |

After having seen a hundred pairs of Indian lovers hang themselves together, poison seems a less romantic way to die pressed against your lover's dead body.

Of course there are some poisons that do the job painlessly - you pass out and subsequently croak. However, one would not expect a couple in rural India to have that sort of sophisticated knowledge of poisons, so I concur with the assessment that hanging would most likely have been less painful.
