How were they not able to escape? Just laying on the bed. Maybe its just me being dumb or maybe they died of the smoke before the fire started.

Again, if you're being literal, the lack of oxygen and the complete over take of them by carbon monoxide would have made them weak and in most fires you will find the victim died from the breathing in of the fumes, and not the actual fire itself.

It's shocking how quickly smoke inhalation will kill you by various mixtures of heat, chemical asphyxiants, and irritant compounds. There is a saying that goes something like "the first breath brings you to your knees, the second puts you to sleep, and the third is your last".
