Re: Young Australian Woman Drowns on Vacation

Why is her identity hidden ?

Her family is raising funds (15,000$ goals) on GFM to bring her body home and pay for her funerals... They already raised 21,000$.

Her sister, brother and parents are trying to know the truth.
Cambodgian forensics say she drowned and seem to say she wasn't murdered.

So, people tend to believe she drowned because she was intoxicated and some said she went caught in a flash flood.

Some Combodia expats wrote :

"Nightime swimming = drowning in the river at Kampot too often. Usually young and fit victims, but probably had one too many and there's no one there to save them."

"While she might be a great swimmer, don't forget she was likely swimming in the dark, in a river with a current, and presumably quite intoxicated (nobody comes to party in Kampot and only drink a couple beers)."

"I was in Kampot this weekend, there was very heavy rain late Friday/early Saturday, a lot of the roads and paddy fields were still pretty flooded at lunch time, that river would have been a really strong current with a lot of shit floating in it."
I got the story and photo's posted here on DR before the mainstream media. () I have been advised in the past by a moderator to censor names, home locations of 'westerners', etc due to possible libel. Now that this poor girls death has hit the news all over the place, and her identity is freely available, I'm waiting to hear from a mod whether to link a news report/details in.

Re: Young Australian Woman Drowns on Vacation

Cambodia has huge catfish that will pull you under and there's nothing you can do. When I lived in that part of the world, unless you were fishing, you didn't go in the water unless you knew it well

30lb cat fish is enough to stop you getting to the surface for air...but at the end of the day, a drowning is a drowning...Still would be nice for her family if it was a large cat fish, and not just her being intoxicated playing a part....Don't understand these people that go swimming at night in unknown waters...

It's undignified to die in a swimsuit, have your identity known an worst of all, have the word DICK written on your right butt cheek, with that writing visible while the victim was floating face down. Her family and friends would definitely be horrified at these pictures.

Re: Young Australian Woman Drowns on Vacation

It wasn't a flash flood according to the local police.
"There was no flood," Comm Chanmathurith said in a telephone interview.

"I think maybe she drank some alcohol, went for a swim at night and drowned."
I am very much inclined to agree that it was most likely alcohol related.

As an Australian I think I am fair to say that most young Australians are good swimmers, it's something that is pushed in schools and by most parents.

It was also said that she grew up in Inverloch, Inverloch is a coastal town. An Australian kid growing up in a coastal town would know how to swim pretty damn well to say the least, particularly one who apparently loved to travel.

The final piece of my assumption is the swimsuit itself, sure it's a little flashy, but it's still a one-piece swimsuit, she wasn't wearing something to sunbake (which obviously at night she couldn't) or to simply splash around in, she put it on because she planned to go out beyond her depth, she willingly entered the water for a swim entirely expecting to come back alive.

The idea that she could easily slip under and drown not far from where she was staying after all her years of experience most likely never crossed her mind as she went in.

So I would say with all the information, the most likely result is alcohol, possibly hypothermia.
