Xin Zhui, Lady Dai: Preserved Mummy Excavated in Changsha, China, 1972
Xin Zhui, known as Lady Dai, was a Chinese noblewoman whose exceptionally preserved body was excavated at Mawangdui in Changsha, China, in 1972. She was the wife of Li Cang, Marquis of Dai and chancellor of the Kingdom of Changsha. She died at about age 50 in 169 or 168 BC. Workers encountered the tomb in 1968 while digging an air-raid shelter, and excavation began in January 1972. Xin Zhui had been placed inside nested lacquered coffins that were sealed from the surrounding environment and filled with an acidic liquid. Her skin remained soft, her joints were still flexible, and her organs and blood vessels were intact. An autopsy was conducted at the Hunan Provincial Medical Institute on December 14, 1972. Her pale, swollen appearance resulted from the unusual preservation conditions. Her remains are held by the Hunan Museum. |
