The conventional equipment for sampling a location like that is a plastic beaker attached to a pole, or a hollow pole with ball-check valve on the bottom.

I've been around similar facilities and they are no joke - the dangers are extremely real and the consequence of not being careful is potentially a terrible death. The gasses from anaerobic digesters is especially terrible - and deadly.

Painfully, if they weren't unconscious already from submersion in sewage. I would take drowning in sewage + 12 inch pipe extrusion over gasoline mob burning by blackamoors, but I would probably take a beheading over the sewage death. The article also mentions a few 90 degree curves in the pipe. Here is an actual video of someone caught in a fudge pipe: |
