I've used a metal lathe. They are dangerous. My H.S. shop teacher had only 3 fingers on one had due to his stupidity. He always told us to wear a short sleave shirt when using one.

you are not supposed to wear loose and dangling dress/jacket or ties when working a rotating machine... once it snatches a tip of your outfit, nothing much you can do to stop it

that one looks like the machine snatched his sweater/jacket sleeves and pulled him into the rotating part.

I do not recall a back story to this series of pictures. All I can surmise is if I remember correctly that he flung himself into the machine for suicide. I could be wrong. The machine looks to be some type of lathe.
