On July 1, 2017, a fisherman found the decomposing body of an elderly woman in Cebu waters off Maravilla, Tabuelan. The body was wrapped in a fishing net and had a rope around the neck, police said. Because the fisherman could not contact officials in Cebu, he alerted the Bantay Dagat coastal watch in Escalante City, across the water in ****** Occidental. The body was then towed to the Escalante shore.

A family from Calatrava later identified the woman as 64-year-old Laureta Cabag, whose name was also recorded as Luarita Lumayno y Cabag. The family said she had been swept away by floodwaters in a river on June 20 and had been missing for 11 days. The body was wearing only underwear and was already in an advanced state of decomposition. The identification was not reported as forensically confirmed. No cause or manner of death was established, and the presence of the rope and fishing net was never explained.
