There are quite a few cases in DR photos of tight clothing, particularly shorts, being opened by emergency responders. This is done to relieve pressure and improve blood circulation and is done when it is not immediately obvious that the victim is dead. Clearly this is not the explanation in the present case where the victim had been dead for an extended period prior to being discovered, but is the likely explanation in several other cases.
