In Caruaru on the afternoon of 1st August 2017, a woman was murdered by her daughter inside her own house.

59 year old Maria do Carmo da Silva was stabbed to death in the neck by 27 year old Janaína Maria da Silva.

Police + an ambulance arrived quickly but Maria was already dead + Janaína was crying alongside her sister in front of the house that they lived. According to her sister, after killing their mother, Janaína had threatened to kill her + her other sister. "When I got home, I saw my mother dead in the living room + Janaína started running after me + my sister with the knife in her hand," said Amanda Mirele, another daughter of Maria. According to relatives, Janaína had already threatened to kill her mother other times + suffered from depression.

Janaína claims that she killed her mother because she had threatened to hit her. Her sister, however, said it wasn't true + that her sister killed their mother "for madness".

Jose Augusto, a neighbour, said that after the murder, Janaína was outside of the house + threatened her 3 year old son. He says that he took the boy in + called the police.
