Woman Stabbed and Killed in Her Apartment

August 1992 - Grand Prairie, Texas. Angela, a white female, 26 years of age, had been raped and sodomized in her garden apartment. On August 28 at approximately 11:30 a.m., her father discovered her body. The father had gone to Angela’s apartment because he hadn’t heard from her and was concerned that she did not answer her telephone. Her front door was locked from the inside and her car was parked in the parking lot of the complex. Her father contacted the building manager and accompanied him back to his daughter’s apartment. Together, they entered her locked apartment by using a security passkey and discovered her dead body on the floor covered in blood.

Grand Prairie, Texas, police responded to the 911 call from the building manager. After determining that the victim, in fact, was dead from apparent stab wounds, they secured the crime scene. The building manager and father of the victim were questioned by uniform patrol and were requested to await the arrival of the investigators. During this initial patrol inquiry, the officers elicited information from management concerning some incidents that Angela had complained about and the names of three possible suspects, which were provided to the arriving detectives.

The deceased occupied an apartment on the second floor of a two-story garden apartment complex. The body of the victim had been positioned in a supine position just inside the front door with her legs spread. Near her head lay her bloody panties. Her blouse had been ripped open exposing a blood-soaked bra. The bra had been pushed up to expose her breasts. Except for the bra, she was nude. The condition of the apartment indicated that there had been a furious struggle. A trail of blood extended from the victim throughout the apartment indicating that she had fought with her assailant as she attempted to ward off the attack and escape. Furniture had been knocked over and a telephone answering machine was on the floor next to the victim’s body.

There were numerous stab wounds into the victim’s chest and breast area as well as obvious defense wounds on her hands and arms. There was also a blood splatter pattern on the wall near where the body lay. In addition, her throat had been cut with numerous slashes across the neck. There were incised wounds across her eyes and eyelids. There were bloody tissues in the sink and an empty beer bottle in the trash receptacle similar to the brand found in the victim’s refrigerator.

Angela was 26 years old at the time of her murder. She lived alone in her garden apartment complex. Angela also worked part-time as a model and aspiring actress. People who knew Angela described her as an out-going person who loved life and liked people. She was studying for her nursing degree at Texas Women’s University and had been afforded a Navy Nurse Commission. She had already received orders to work in Okinawa after graduation as a commissioned officer and registered nurse in a midwife program and was excited about the opportunities. Angela had previously served in the U.S. Army as a medic after graduation from Arlington High School but had joined the Navy for a nursing career.

It was suspected that the victim might have known her attacker because she had apparently allowed the offender into her apartment. There was no evidence of a break-in or forced entry. It was obvious that the offender spent a considerable amount of time in the apartment. The offender even locked the door upon leaving the premises.

The police discovered that a neighbor had seen the victim letting a man carrying fast food into her apartment. Authorities obtained a description of that male and issued a plea for this man to come forward to assist in the investigation. It was unknown whether or not that male was a suspect in Angela’s killing.

Detectives were also able to determine that two of her neighbors heard “screams” at about 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, August 27. One of her neighbors, who resided below Angela, heard a woman scream upstairs and then heard the sound of running in the apartment above her. The other neighbor who resided directly across the hallway also heard screams about the same time. However, they did not think to call the police when silence suddenly followed the screaming. The neighbors returned to sleep.

An autopsy later found that the victim’s trachea had been cut preventing her from crying out. Ironically, the victim’s sister had called about the same time. Of course, there was no answer. It was during this time that the offender was sexually assaulting and killing Angela. Sadly, had either of the neighbors called 911, the victim may have been saved and the offender apprehended at the scene.

The victim had numerous stab wounds in her chest and breast. She also had extensive defense wounds on her arms and hands, which she sustained attempting to fight off her attacker. The blood spatter on the rugs, as well as the drainage blood from her torso, indicated that the offender had manipulated her body by turning her over onto her stomach. He then repositioned her body in a supine position before leaving the scene. The victim’s chest and breast area bore the rug pattern in blood from lying on the blood-soaked rug.

When the body was turned over by the detectives, they observed additional stab wounds in her back. These wounds were shallow and more consistent with torture-type injuries. The detectives also observed blood on the soles of her feet indicating that the victim had run through her own blood as she attempted to escape her attacker. In addition, investigators found evidence that the killer had taken a wet towel from the wash and had “cleaned” the pubic area of the victim prior to engaging in vaginal sex.

A close examination of the body revealed the presence of “foreign” pubic hairs caught in the pubis of the victim. These hairs were black in color and contrasted against the lighter hair of the victim’s pubis. A crime scene photo was taken of this evidence in situ. The evidence at the crime scene indicated that she had been raped and anally sodomized. This was later verified by the medical examiner. A total of 11 pubic hairs were recovered. They were determined to originate from an African American and eventually matched to the suspect.

It was apparent that the offender had taken a beer from the victim’s refrigerator and brought the beer into the bathroom where he cleaned up. It was also determined that the offender had wiped the beer bottle clean of any fingerprints and had wiped down the scene.

The detectives had learned during the canvass that a male had been seen entering the victim’s apartment carrying fast food. The refrigerator was checked and a box of Church’s Chicken was located. They processed the box for fingerprints with negative results. However, more importantly, when they opened the refrigerator door, they observed a smudged print in blood on the front of a wine box. Immediately to the rear of that same wine box was a clear fingerprint in blood. Apparently, when the offender moved the wine box to get himself a beer, he left a perfect patent print in blood on the container.

On August 29, an autopsy was performed on the body of the victim. She had been stabbed 113 times. Her throat was cut and there were incised wounds across her eyes and defensive wounds on both arms and hands. The weapon was estimated to be approximately four inches long. The cause of death was ruled to be multiple stab wounds of the chest and abdomen: homicide.

In addition to the stab wounds, there were numerous incised wounds to the face, neck, and throat of the victim as well as numerous defensive-type wounds on her hands. There was also injury to the interior aspect of the vaginal vault. Her trachea had been cut, which prevented her from screaming. The autopsy revealed that the victim had been raped and anally sodomized. A rape kit procedure was employed and it was determined that there was a sufficient amount of genetic material to do a DNA analysis.

The first officers had established from management and neighbors that within the last three months the victim had complained about some unwanted attention and contact by male residents. There was an incident involving a former resident of the apartment complex, named Kenneth Renord Smith, a 32-year-old black male. According to Angela’s complaint, he had been leaving notes on her car indicating that he wanted to date her. She had complained to management and friends about these unwanted solicitations. However, because Smith had moved from the complex in June, the manager advised the complainant that they couldn’t intervene for her. Detectives started to look more closely at Smith, and he was brought in for interrogation.

The detectives had obtained fingerprints from the subject and established that the left middle finger of Smith matched the bloody patent print on the wine box. This was extremely important evidence, especially if Smith said he had never been in Angela’s apartment. How did his bloody fingerprint end up on a wine box in the victim’s apartment? Smith was unable to present a verifiable alibi for his whereabouts at the time of the crime. At this point, Smith was formally charged with Angela’s murder. Kenneth Renord Smith invoked his rights under Miranda. Rape and sodomy charges would be added later after conferring with the laboratory.

Eventually, detectives were able to locate the unknown male who had brought the Church’s Chicken to the deceased’s apartment. He had contacted the deceased through work and come over to her house with the fast-food only to find that she wasn’t feeling well. He made a date to return and left shortly thereafter. He was cleared of any involvement in the death of Angela.

The search warrants executed on Kenneth Renord Smith for physical specimens of blood and hair proved to be valuable. Eventually, all of the hairs found on the victim were matched to Smith. The semen and sperm found in the victim were analyzed by Southwest Institute of Forensic Sciences and matched through DNA analysis to Smith.

The subject was allowed to plead guilty to capital murder to cover the indictment. In February of the following year, he received a life sentence and must serve 35 years before the possibility of parole.

Kenneth Renord Smith is now 62-years-old and is incarcerated at Ellis Prison, TX, and is eligible for parole on September 23rd, 2027.
