At the time of the incident, Cargill was under investigation by Child Protective Services (CPS) for alleged child abuse. Her sons had been removed from her custody, and a custody hearing was scheduled for June 23, 2010. Walker, a 39-year-old woman with mental disabilities, had been subpoenaed to testify at this hearing. Fearing that Walker's testimony would be detrimental to her case, Cargill sought to prevent her from appearing in court.

The Crime
On June 18, 2010, after learning about the subpoena, Cargill met with Walker under the pretense of discussing the upcoming testimony. During this encounter, Cargill killed Walker by asphyxiation. She then transported Walker's body to a rural area, doused it with lighter fluid, and set it on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Walker's body was discovered the following day, and it took four days for authorities to identify her remains.

Trial and Conviction
Cargill was arrested and charged with capital murder within a month of the crime. During her trial, she claimed that Walker had suffered a seizure and died unexpectedly, prompting her to dispose of the body out of fear and panic. However, forensic evidence indicated that Walker's death was due to homicidal violence, consistent with asphyxiation. The jury found Cargill guilty of capital murder in May 2012, and she was subsequently sentenced to death by lethal injection.

Appeals and Current Status
Cargill has filed multiple appeals against her conviction and death sentence. In October 2014, she sought a new trial based on new evidence from an epilepsy specialist who suggested that Walker's death could have been due to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). However, this appeal was denied. Further appeals to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court were also unsuccessful. As of 2025, Cargill remains on death row at the Patrick O'Daniel Unit in Texas, awaiting the scheduling of her execution.

It’s like here in the good ol USA. Prosecutors, police, detectives just want to clear cases to make their departments look good. Innocent or guilty, without a bunch of money & a good defense attorney an accused is screwed.
