She was a mindless idiot. She would not have ever gotten him first. If someone tells you on repeated occasions that they are going to hurt and/or kill you - you get the fuck out of there - ESPECIALLY when you have a child. She did not deserve to live. Too dumb. The weeding out process isn't always neat and clean, I guess.  |

Totally vile opinion. You've never been trapped in a violent relationship, I presume. It is layered with complexity many want to escape but are abused and manipulated and threatened with fear of consequences if they do, even highly intelligent professional people. Really frustrating to observe, but we don't know what he had threatened her or the child or her family with if she had left. Very sad and hope child is found safe.

I do agree, get out and never expose child to such horrors, but it's all too easy to say this most women are no longer able to, are terrified of consequences or not supported and protected in leaving.

And yet many women (and children) do escape. Those who do not or 'cannot' are suffering a weakness of character and willpower. I am not, of course, saying that the abuser is in the right or a good person or not worthy of punishment. And yes, some abusers may be worse than others in both threats and levels of violence. But the fact that many women do manage to extricate themselves from equally dangerous/terrible situations still shows that many who do NOT leave are staying because they are too weak and ineffectual to do so. It doesn't mean that they're bad people, but ultimately they are still victims by choice. The choice to leave may have consequences and it may be a terrifying choice to make. Nonetheless, plenty of women do make the choice and are better off for it. Sometimes even they cannot overcome the consequences and they are injured or murdered even after choosing to leave. And yet they still exhibited the fortitude of will and strength of character to make the right choice. I suppose much of the problem is that strong, independent people with high self-esteem do not typically get involved with abusive losers, or they leave at the first sign of trouble and never allow the pattern to develop. The demographic is likely skewed because of this. In any case, I'm not saying that the issue isn't complex or that there aren't exceptions, but the fact remains that most of the people who refuse to extricate themselves are 'stuck' in the cycle because they lack the courage to break it. Whether it is due to manipulation by their abuser or personal weakness (or, in most cases, a combination of both), the fact that many people do pull themselves out stands as testimony that it is far from impossible to do so. |

Exactly, Vedderman. I cannot have sympathy for a mother who isn't strong enough to fight. It is a weakness that has to be overcome, or death usually results. Once you become a mother, you have to have that unrelenting fire and will to protect your young - threats be damned. If you refuse to do that - you've failed on the most primal of levels. It may be vile, but it's the truth. If I were trapped financially and by other threats, I'd be backed into a corner and forced to kill him(in this scenario). Then again, I'm more of a bear than a scared rabbit. |
