A 19-year-old woman, Diana M., was killed when an enraged bear dragged her away from a hiking path, and mauled her legs.

According to Diana's boyfriend, the bear - identified as a female, around 4-5 years old - first grabbed the teen's leg and hauled her off the path before throwing her off the cliff, which likely killed Diana instantly.

The valley was too narrow for Diana's body to be recovered via helicopter. When rescuers arrived at the scene, they found the snarling ursine circling the body. The bear, which was reportedly growling and "making their presence felt", was shot dead.

The president of Romania's mountain rescue services noted that they had never encountered such a situation before. A post-mortem analysis of the bear showed that the ursine was not rabid. The bear also did not have any cubs and was not in heat.

Romania has a population of around 8,000 brown bears.

The SMURD helicopter arrives in the area. Rescuers find the boy [Diana's boyfriend]. They descend 120 meters rappelling into the valley, but the 19-year-old young woman was already deceased.

I would say she is dead when she is on the stretcher. No sign of blood flow at that point on any of her injuries.
