Police are investigating if a shooting incident in Taman OUG, Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday was linked to a Ponzi scheme in China.
Real estate agent Datin Wong Siu Ling, 32, was gunned down in broad daylight as she was driving in the area.
City CID chief SAC Rusdi Mohd Isa said: “Wong’s husband admitted to running an illegal Ponzi scheme in China and returned recently after making a profit.
“This could be a possible motive for the murder, but we are not ruling out other possiblities.”
It is understood the husband ran “several businesses” in Malaysia and China and had returned recently.
The couple were also involved in a comestics business.
The husband told he believed the attack could be due to an investment deal gone wrong.
He said Wong had invested “millions” in a ceramic business eight months ago but lost all of it after the individual she was dealing with “went missing”.
“We hired a private investigator but he could not obtain any details. My wife was persistent and recently set out to find the man who absconded her money.
“I believe the perpetrator knew we were looking for him. He could be behind this.”
Rusdi, however, said the husband did not mention such claims to police when his statement was recorded.
Two assailants on a motorcycle fired five shots at Wong’s Toyota Vellfire, killing her on the spot.
She was with her five children, aged between two and 13, and her maid at the time. Her eight-year-old daughter Wong Pei Yen was hit by a stray bullet and is in critical condition. Rusdi said Pei Yen underwent a second surgery yesterday to remove a slug from her liver.
Wong’s family members were baffled how such an amiable person could be murdered in cold blood. The victim’s parents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was the youngest of three sisters and was always a caring and considerate person.
Wong’s cousin said even the victim’s husband was a kind person, leaving her puzzled anyone would want to hurt the family.
She added the victim shared a loving relationship with her husband and their five children.
The family planned to send the children for counselling to ease their trauma from the incident, she said.
Malay Mail Afternoon E-Paper yesterday reported Wong was the intended target. A police source said initial investigations showed it was a planned killing and not a case of mistaken identity.
“The gunman and his accomplice were apparently spotted roaming in the area before gunning down the victim. They moved in immediately after the victim and her children left the restaurant.
“The suspects clearly saw who was getting into the vehicle,” the source said.
There were claims the victim was mistakenly gunned down. It was speculated the target was her husband.
The husband had earlier said he had travelled to China for business and was supposed to go to Penang for a holiday with his family.
