A bit of background info: What Cameroon is experiencing s a new twist on the ol' "West African genocidal rampage perpetrated by the government and blamed on the victims" scenario. The majority of Cameroon is Francophonie, including the central government, but there is a significant Anglophone minority in some areas, due to the way France and the UK divided up the territory after seizing it from Germany as per the Treaty of Versailles. Essentially, the government started eliminating English-language courts, schools, etc., with the goal of "unification". In response, English-speakers started protesting by marching in several cities and pursuing other types of civil disobedience. Government leaders, being thoughtful, reasonable, caring individuals, decided to respond to the protests by having the army shoot the protestors and then go to their villages and burn the elderly and young children alive. This happened in several different locations. Then the government decided "fuck the pretense" and starting destroying English-speaking communities unprovoked, seemingly at random. The English speakers started fighting back, and have declared their independence. Just recently, they killed around 100 men from the government security forces. What is the point of it all? Unlike most of these "conflicts", this has no ideological foundation. Not really. It's just greed. The English-speakers control much of the offshore oil industry. The government finds the arrangement unsatisfactory, and decided alter it. |
