Westgate Mall Attack: 67 Killed in Nairobi, Kenya, September 21, 2013
Al-Shabaab gunmen attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya, on September 21, 2013, killing 67 people and injuring about 200. The attack led to a multi-day siege by Kenyan forces. The Somalia-based group claimed responsibility. Shoppers fled through the mall as armed men moved along escalators and upper levels. Wounded people were helped outside or carried away, and people were lowered from a window. Smoke rose above the building during the siege. A Kenyan court convicted Mohamed Ahmed Abdi and Hussein Hassan Mustafa of helping the attackers on October 7, 2020. Neither was convicted of the killings themselves. On October 30, 2020, the court sentenced Abdi to 33 years and Mustafa to 18 years, reduced to roughly 26 and 11 years after time spent in custody was deducted. Abdi also received an additional 15-year sentence for possessing terrorism material.
