A witness told Stuff they saw armed police chasing after a person before shooting him down outside Footlocker.

"They follow the guy and then they shoot him. Three shots, he was dead."

The witness said they had initially seen the man that would be shot, run past them.

"He was just running... I couldn't tell what his intentions are, I'm sure they weren't great."

The witness told Stuff they could tell something was wrong.

"There was a pistol in his hand but I kind of didn't find that out until later.

"Knowing that he was so close to me with a gun even is just kind of scary, but he looked like a normal dude."

Wasn't a pistol but at approximately 2:00 PM, the man stole an air rifle from the Gun City store and fled in a white Suzuki Swift, driving erratically toward the Mount Wellington Highway while being pursued by police.

The vehicle chase ended when his car drove over a traffic island and became completely stranded at an intersection directly outside the Sylvia Park Shopping Centre.

At roughly 2:50 PM, the suspect abandoned the crashed car and ran onto the mall grounds on foot while still openly carrying the long-barrelled air rifle.

Armed police units tightly tracked him as he neared a mall entrance. He was intercepted underneath an overpass, where officers confronted and subsequently shot him. The idiot died
