Chinese retail investor Wang Qian, 31, died by suicide at Shenlixia Scenic Area in Panzhai Town, Pujiang County, Zhejiang province, on September 7, 2018. Her body was found early that morning, and a handwritten note dated September 6 was recovered from her car at the scene.

Wang had invested about 260,000 yuan, roughly $40,000, in the peer-to-peer lending platform PPMiao, which announced in early August that it could no longer continue operating. In her note, Wang wrote that her case had been filed with Hangzhou police nearly a month earlier but that no arrests had been made and no funds had been frozen. She also described traveling to Shanghai to seek repayment from shareholders and being driven away by police and auxiliary personnel at the city's Letters and Calls Bureau. Wang wrote that ordinary people were too weak to fight and that she could no longer see any hope.
