Victims of Chilean Wildfires Which Killed At Least 123

At least 123 people have been killed by forest fires in Chile's Valparaíso region, local authorities have said. President Gabriel Boric declared a state of emergency and said he would make "all necessary resources" available to tackle the situation. A 9pm curfew has been introduced in the hardest-hit areas, and two days of national mourning has been announced.

It is believed to be Chile's deadliest forest fire on record, and its worst disaster since the 2010 earthquake which killed 525. Many of those affected were visiting the coastal region during the summer holidays.

Hundreds of people are still missing, authorities say, stoking fears the death toll will keep climbing as more bodies are found on hillsides and houses devastated by the wildfires. At least 14,000 houses have been damaged in the Vina del Mar and Quilpué areas alone. Those who returned to their ravaged homes found them almost unrecognizable, with many losing all their life's possession.

The wildfires might have been in Chile, but I don't think it was Chile in the wildfires.

Re: Victims of Chilean Wildfires Which Killed At Least 123

I remember a story in a book about the Peshtigo Fire in Wisconsin. It happened at the same time as the Great Chicago Fire, but was much larger.

Many of the survivors went into the rivers to stay alive, and one boy reported seeing a pretty girl with long blond hair, that he had a crush on, who was in his class at school, and she was trying to get to the river. He saw her approach, and then said she just burst into flames. He looked later at the spot he saw her burn, and found the little metal snap plates from her stocking garters, and it made him cry.

All the victims they could find were gathered and buried at the Peshtigo Town Cemetery, and the church at the cemetery became the Peshtigo Fire Museum. It's very interesting, with a lot of touching stories, and hundreds of mementos of the fire.

It sounded like the fires in Chile.

Re: Victims of Chilean Wildfires Which Killed At Least 123

amazing, how yea, his clothes was burned completely off and some still had their clothes maybe burnt but clothes left on. I wonder how long it took before he died so he didn't have to feel anymore pain from the fire, hopefully he went pretty quick..

part of it is traffic congestion as the population flee; there's only so much you can do in that situation
