We had a guy on the estate I live. Someone started a rumour that he was a paedophile. Windows got put through on his house, he got beat up. The police confirmed he was NOT a paedophile or even a criminal.

Besides the car batteries, who knows what really happened but the people covered in ash.
What if the guy/people that accused them actually stole some car batteries, then used these fellas as escape goats?
I'd say that would be the perfect permanent cover-up. It figures he'd know someone would find out their battery are gone, and what better excuse than, "well they already caught who did it." Only thing better would be if the escape goats couldn't talk after the blame .
