Veerappan Killed in Operation Cocoon, Tamil Nadu, October 18, 2004 (Photos)
On October 18, 2004, Koose Munisamy Veerappan was fatally shot near Papparapatti in Dharmapuri district, Tamil Nadu. Regarded as India's most wanted forest bandit, he was a kidnapper, elephant poacher and sandalwood smuggler blamed for scores of deaths throughout Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. During a mission code-named Cocoon, the Tamil Nadu Special Task Force used the promise of eye treatment to entice him from the forest in a vehicle camouflaged as an ambulance. After staging a breakdown, the force killed Veerappan and three associates in a gunfight lasting roughly 20 minutes. His widow and rights activists alleged that the encounter had been staged. A court-ordered review concluded there was no case for a CBI probe. Post-mortem photographs were made public at the time. |
