Valdivio Alves Chaves, 74, was electrocuted while in contact with an old refrigerator at his home on Rua Sao Jose do Panorama in Itabela, Bahia, around 11:30 p.m. on January 25, 2011. The electrical incident was followed by a fire inside the house. Neighbors used water to extinguish the flames, and a neighbor rescued a minor who had been inside the burning home.

Police attended the scene, and the property was cordoned off for investigation by the civil police. Chaves's body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine for an autopsy. No final autopsy finding or formal cause of death was reported, and it was not established publicly whether a fault in the refrigerator caused the electrocution. The child's relationship to Chaves was also not reported. Family members said he had no mental disturbance, did not drink, and had recently closed a small business he operated.
