UN: Isaipriya Captured Alive, Executed in Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka, May 18, 2009
Isaipriya, a 27-year-old news presenter for the LTTE's media division, was pulled alive and unarmed from the Nandi Kadal lagoon near Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka, by Sri Lankan soldiers on May 18, 2009, the final day of the country's civil war. The soldiers gave her a white cloth to cover herself. Later images showed Isaipriya dead among bound and blindfolded bodies. She had been shot in the head, and her body was exposed. A U.N. human rights investigation found reasonable grounds to believe she had been captured alive and then executed, and that her body was deliberately desecrated. The Sri Lankan government has described her as an LTTE lieutenant colonel killed in combat and has called the footage fabricated. The investigation did not establish that she was raped. No one has been prosecuted. |
