They didn't strap in because they didn't expect an accident.
You are correct. When I give accident/safety training, the drivers will sluff it off, shrug their shoulders and say, "Eh, that won't happen to me". Soon after, I am out on the highway completing their accident investigation. The driver is either taken to the hospital, morgue, or given their walking papers.
