Two Headstones Were Found in the Yard of a House My Parents Own...
Long story short. My parents bought a house, renovated it, and now rent it out through an agency. Yesterday morning, my mom got an email telling her that two headstones got unearthed in the backyard, and the city's historical society would show up to look into the matter. I eventually get updated, and she was told that parts of the yard are sunken in which is consistent with a burial site, and so it's more than likely that there are graves. Her options were to just let it be, and nothing else would be required of her. Or that they could dig the yard up, but the responsibility of contacting possible family members and/or relocation would fall on the property owners. Now this is all incredibly bizarre, because the house first belonged to an aunt and uncle that have lived there for two decades before selling the house, and my parents have done no small amount of work on the place up to and including underground electrical work. ![]() · |

Be really interesting to find out the full history of the area, could even be church foundations nearby - and skeletal remains of course! If it were me, I'd have to know all the the details and relocate the graves. What would you do? I uploaded a small skull to give your thread a thumbnail. Please upload all images to the site as if Photobucket develops a problem, your thread will become redundant. Thanks |

The upload button wasn't working for my phone. I'll try again tomorrow if I have access to a big kid's computer. To answer your other question. Remaining ignorant and not disturbing the possible graves is the least possible route, not only for the reasons I stated, but also if you don't know there's bodies under the lawn you're not required to disclose that if the house get's sold. Finding out for sure and taking on those responsibilities would probably be costly both in time and money. |

Re: Two Headstones Were Found in the Yard of a House My Parents Own...
If the markings on the headstones are incomplete (as the one in the photo appears to be): stonemasons often incorporated "defective" headstones into flights of stone steps, basement walls, sidewalks, all sorts of things. The explanation may be quite innocent. Might be a lot more fun to leave it as a mystery. Mind, ground-penetrating radar should be able to show whether there are any buried "anomalies" without digging anything up.
