Yes, they do, I've seen it through out mexico & the Caribbean, odd to us but getting a loan or mortgage is weird to them

You save a little money, you buy some rebar and concrete and work on the house.

You save some more, next year you do the same

One day, you'll have finished enough to move in, working and saving and building, the whole time...maybe you or your kids finish the house, but land is cheap and money hard to obtain, so... build it yourself
