The victim was named as Mohamed Mebarki. Human Rights Watch recorded the death of Mohamed Amine Mbarki, born March 16, 1993. He was shot on January 8, 2011 at the Monguela roundabout, located in the Hai ez-Zehour district of Kasserine, Tunisia, and died the following day. A forensic report from Kasserine Hospital, dated January 20, 2011, listed a facial gunshot wound. His age was 17, rather than 19 as originally stated, although one account placed it at 16.

He was among roughly 22 people killed by live fire across Kasserine and Thala during four days of shootings. Those events shifted a regional protest into the revolt that forced Zine El Abidine Ben Ali from power on January 14, 2011. The shooter was never identified, and a military tribunal never established who opened fire. Whether regular police or trained marksmen were responsible remains disputed. Residents subsequently gave the roundabout the name Martyr's Square. The foreign reporter mentioned as having been killed by police was Lucas Mebrouk Dolega, a French-German photographer. A tear gas canister struck him in the face in Tunis on January 14, 2011, and he died on January 17.
